Floor work

There were only a couple of us in Fonda's class tonight and we decided we wanted to start doing floorwork, so she taught us some exercises and ways to get to and from the floor, so we can practice in preparation for learning more in the future. I expect to have sore quads and calves tomorrow!

Now I need to muster up the energy and enthusiasm to do my homework.

On the floor!

Day 290 of practice.

In tonight's class, Jolie had a small piece of floorwork in the choreography, which means I'm probably going to have bruises on my knees. But it was worth it to learn a cool way to get down to the floor! Besides, while it may still be 100 degrees here, I don't think I'm going to wear shorts this week so what does it matter if my knees are a little battered?

At first I didn't want to take this class, but I'm glad I did. Learning choreography isn't my thing, but Jolie uses it to teach us certain concepts. Tonight, for instance, was about switching between fast and slow, and also learning to be still. Good exercises to stretch my brain!

Under the weather but awesome

Day 97 of practice.

You would expect that since today is Thursday, I would be posting about a lovely night of Plaza de Anaya dance classes. But no. Instead I feel like I'm coming down with something, so I stayed home and dosed up on vitamins, drank a million glasses of water, and sulked because I missed out on cupcakes in rhythm class. CUPCAKES!!! It's really important to me that I not get sick, because I have Mira Betz workshops this weekend! Not only have I been looking forward to them for months and months, but I already paid for the workshops and a ticket to the accompanying show, and it's all non-refundable, so I will be both sad and out of some money if I can't go. But mostly sad!

Anyway, my plan was to have a full-length but gentle practice session at home, work on my solo, do some Anaya Tribal moves, and play around with a song that I love and will probably dance to the next time The Dance Loft has a hafla (that being the only place that lets a solo girl like me dance to a song over 5 minutes).

So I warmed up, and that went well; and I worked on my solo, and while I missed a couple musical cues, I also found some good moves for a couple of spots I was unsure on; then my song came on and I was just ON. I went from gentle, fun moves to just relax, to really throwing myself into the music, complete with hair tosses and floorwork. Floorwork! Without knee pads! On tile! In shorts! I even tried that classic Cleopatra pose with an undulation, which probably looked ridiculous because I've never done it before, but what the hell. I was in my living room and the dogs were the only ones watching, and they clearly think all dance is ridiculous. The point is, in the moment I felt awesome.

Of course, then the song ended and I said "Wait a second, I'm supposed to be taking it easy, what was that all about?" and I felt a little overheated and beat up, so I decided to turn off my music, cool down, and I'll round out my practice with the hand drills that we did in Fonda's class last night, because you can never work too hard on beautiful hands.

Dance, dance, dance, then party, party, party!

Day 62 of practice.

No Plaza de Anaya for me tonight, instead I am off to the VIP Dinner and Concert for Wild Wild West Con! My inner steampunk (her name is Miss Sophia Freelove Greene) is going to come out and play.

But before I get all gussied up (oh yes, there will be gussying!), I had to get some dance practice. First, shimmy drills with Rachel Brice. I was feeling a little wussy today, and pressed for time, so I stopped when she got to 3/4 shimmies. I am so bad at 3/4 shimmies, sometimes I feel like they're going to take away my belly dancing license. Since the shimmies warmed me up nicely, I jumped into veil practice. I even did some simple floorwork, although I don't know if that will make it into my performance or not. Then I did some Anaya Tribal fast moves, to the song "Turbo Tabla 4" which I know really well because we dance to a remix of it at Anaya Tribal class fairly regularly. Being more familiar with it allows me to have a lot of fun matching up specific moves with different parts of the music and makes me feel like maybe I can go ahead and keep my belly dancing license. But then I decided to practice my zills along with some basic tribal moves, and I began to once again fear the belly dance police. My zills sounded awful! Even so, I got bored of doing the same three moves over and over again, so I decided to do some of them leading with my left foot instead of my right, which didn't make me sound any worse and was good practice and left me feeling more balanced.

Now -- the gussying!
