I have two performances this coming weekend, so I hope I'll see at least some of you there!
On Saturday I will be performing at the Plaza de Anaya student recital in Tempe. From 5:30 to 6:30 there will be an open drum and dance, then at 7pm the students will take the stage! This event is free, and you can bring a dish if you want to participate in the potluck meal. I will be performing with the Anaya Tribal students. Click here for the Facebook event page, which has more details.
Then on Sunday I will be performing at the Belly Dance Holiday Show at Fluxx Productions here in Tucson! This hafla will feature visiting dancer Raven Ebner as well as many talented local Tucson dancers. I will be performing with my Wednesday night classmates and debuting my Lovely Creature solo. The event costs $5 and we will also be collecting non-perishables for the food bank. Doors open at 6pm. Click here for the Facebook event page.

I'm at the workshops!
Day 134 of practice.
This is a pre-scheduled post to let you know that today's practice is presumably 4 hours of workshops with Deb Rubin at Plaza de Anaya! Even if I had my laptop with me in Tempe, I'd probably be too busy having an awesome time to actually update this blog. I will be back tomorrow night!

New music!
Day 98 of practice.
Four new CDs in the mail today! That should give me plenty of new music to practice to. Hooray! I ripped them all to my iTunes library (as well as a bunch of other music that I had lying around) so that I can listen to it on my trek to and from Tempe.
I seem to have staved off whatever was trying to take me down yesterday, so I am still on for my weekend of Mira Mania! Woohoo!
Practice so far today has consisted of dancing while doing housework and packing for my trip, and one run-through of my solo. I'll do another run-through before I leave, and work on some drills at some point, too. I just wanted to blog now so I don't forget.

Because I'm hardcore!
Day 69 of practice.
This session, I'm taking all three classes offered on Thursday nights at Plaza de Anaya. That means that I leave the house at around 4:30 and don't get back until around 11:30. People always act shocked and amazed that I make the round-trip drive once a week, more often if I'm also doing a weekend workshop, but hey -- some people commute from Tucson to Phoenix 5 days a week. And in the past, when belly dance was less common, dancers would upend their entire lives and move to another city/state/country to be near good teachers. So yes, I am a little hardcore, but I'm not the most hardcore.
And the three hours of classes won't be too bad this session, because Performance Prep now starts off with some seated Q&A discussion time, about performing and dance and such, and the class I'm taking on Middle Eastern Rhythms for Drummers and Dancers starts off with everyone seated for a drum lesson. So I don't feel nearly as beat up as I did when I was taking Anaya tribal and palm flames and sword. That was a rough session!
We have to come up with a tribal solo for Performance Prep class, so I need to pick a short, fun song to work with... but first, I've got to get through Saturday's veil performance!

Long, dance-filled day
Day 30 of practice.
Well, today I had much more than half an hour of dance practice! I spent two hours at a workshop taught by the lovely and talented Amanda Rose, and I had fun even though there was a lot of choreography (I'm such an improv girl!). We played belly dance tag for our warm-up, which was hilarious. Everyone was laughing by the end.
Then I met up with my friend Jen to practice for our performance. We danced in muddy grass and got dressed in the ASU student union bathroom. Getting ready for a performance is my ultimate girly-girl experience... comparing jewelry and make-up, admiring each other's new accessories, playing with hair, checking that everything looks good from behind, too. It's so much fun.
The performance was... not what I expected. I'm too tired now to get into the full thing, but suffice it to say that there was pretty much no one there. On the bright side, that meant there weren't a lot of people to see me get rushed and flub a few moves. We also participated in some open dancing to live music, which is a rare treat!
Video and perhaps pictures later this week!

Yaaaaaaawn
Day 27 of practice.
Forgive me if this post is a bit short. I got up earlier than usual so we could take my brother-in-law up to Tempe for the day. We had a good time hanging out in the Phoenix area, but I'm quite tired after a very long day.
Our day of course culminated in my usual two hours of Anaya Tribal classes. In Fun-Duh-Mentals, the newbies were finally introduced to zills, with predictably noisy results. I'm glad that we'll be zilling in that class, because I need all the practice I can get. Advanced/Performance Prep involved trying different transitions between formations, which resulted in me picking the entirely wrong move to use in a diagonal formation. Good thing it was just practice!
Also, I got a new green skirt. Squeee! Perhaps this blog should actually be called Confessions of a green skirt addict.
